Besides, it would also explain why he brought Yamato; a wood user, to assist him and control the Kyubi by using his Senju powers. It not only takes water and earth based chakra (which makes mud as well) it takes a special mixture of the two coupled with a powerful life force that breathes life into it creating wood. Yet unlike Hashirama's Mkuton Yamato's lacks the full "breath of life" that is unique to the chakra of the Senju clan. You can see the difference in their Mokuton because Yamato makes just wood while Hashi makes living trees.
