I still can't believe how RIDICOLOUSLY OP Kishi decided to make Gai. And no, the fact that the user dies afterwards isn't an excuse for how out of place strong it is. Although I always knew he was strong, I always though of him as that lesser important side character. He should never have been able to put a scratch on Madara!

I agree that it doesn't make sense but I still am okay with it because it proved that hard work trumps over a heinous and that working all out can get you somewhere in life. Honestly I'm biased because Guy is one of my all-time favorite Naruto characters (I'm talking like top 5 status) but I still think Guy would take the fight in the end.
