Well its not so much to keep it a secret as everyone knows him as Kakashi of the sharingan but its to keep it from taking too much chakra as he can't deactivate it

By covering his sharingan, he preserves his chakra because he can't deactivate it since he's not an Uchiha. It is also stated in the Anime/Mange.

He has to hide his sharingan because he can't deactivate it, this way he doesn't use his sharingan in normal life, and doesn't it drain a lot of his chakra.

but the real reason is because it saps too much chakra as he is not off uchiha bloodline - he can't deactivate
