Can a Woman Raise a Boy to Be a Man?

Had this discussion with someone on FB who ranted that women shouldn't be raising their boys alone, and that a male role model is completely imperative to their growth and development. I happen to disagree, knowing plenty of single mothers who raised great men, even without the presence of a designated male role model. If you agree, what is your definition of a man? What can't a woman do that makes her incompetent to raise a boy by herself? Discuss.

What makes a man, a man ?

What can a woman teach a boy so wrong that ends up ruining what makes him a man ?

If you can answer these then you will find out the answer to whether or not a woman can/ knows how to raise her child alone.


It is true that a boy raised by a woman will end up being more sensitive to some aspects.

It is also true that a boy raised by a man might end up being sensitive because of his own nature.

It is possible that the father of the child got raised by only his mom.

This is not a science and we cannot say something and be 100% accurate since each individual is different.

For example Keanu Reeves was raised by his mom. Anyone who knows and likes this actor realizes how difficult his life was and what his actions are up to this day.

A strong male role model helps but is not KEY to raising a boy.....you don't raise a man, the boy becomes a man on his own accord. A male in the life of a young boy would help quite a bit....some single mothers would not understand the energy and fascination with violence and may come to think her son is a psychopath but in reality the boys gunplay or depiction of battles in his imagination is absolutely normal. Single mothers can do the job just as well as single fathers can with young daughters.

Mothers have rights to raise their children so it should be okay. Sure maybe having a male role model at some point would be good but that's the mother's decision to allow that.

Most kids are raised by women. Men are out there drinking or doing other shit to running away from responsibilities. I have seen a lot of men who had a little influence by their fathers.

I don't think you can raise a child to be a man or woman. How the kid responds to life will determine what kind of man/woman they'll be.

I have 3 happily married, hard working & responsable friends who grew up with single working mothers.

Once people start to question the role of father's then you know society is screwed up. Of course single mothers can raise fine young men. But ultimately lack of male role models generally is a cancer to society as a whole.

Define "man". Someone boisterous, stoic, athletic and domineering? Those are some traits associated with the stereotype; some of them aren't exactly good either.

You should look beyond such primitive concepts and change the question to, "Can a woman raise a good person?"; in which case, the answer is a certain yes. Just as father could for a daughter.

I don't think a mother or father can teach how to be a man. Peoples perspective on what being a man is different. Parents can only be a guide to their kids. It all depends on what they learn and what they choose to keep from that. I think that we can only take from what our parents have taught us and apply that to our lives the way we think is best for us. There are some things that we as humans must discover for ourselves.
