A child on day asked his dear friend a rather strange question.
His friend, perturbed at his question, replied, "Why do you ask Kenshin?"
Replying in a rather sad tone, Kenshin replied to Hiro, "I just want to know."
Sensing the modesty in his tone, Hiro took Kenshin's hand and looked into his eyes.

"You are the most precious thing to me. Someone I admire and hope to be like someday.
If ever there was a doubt in my mind it would be that that may never happen.
My world was bleak with many trials and dark moments.
Your smile was the bright sun that helped me find my way when I couldn't see.
How many a times I think now that I wondered where you were when I didn't have you.
You are more than mere treasure and more then even the stars above us.
They have watched our journey and await to see the path ahead of us."

Then not hesitating, Hiro replied again but with a question to Kenshin.
Upon hearing his question, Kenshin felt quite shocked that he would ask him that.
No one had ever asked him about his feelings nor about his opinion.
Feeling moved by his question, Kenshin replied while crying softly,

"Hiro...how am I to answer such a thing. You should know the answer by now but I see why you ask.
Well...I remember the day when I was a kid. It was a dark and rainy day. It was raining and I was on my way to ask for bread.
You see, back then I had no home or family. I wondered my whole childhood searching for food, warmth, and a home to call my own.
I cried so much because I had no one. Not a pet or acquaintance or a doll. All I had was me.
I had fallen into a well and I had broken my leg. It was dark, cold, and scary.
I surely thought I would die. Who would rescue me? Was this to be the end of my tale?
But you...you found me. You went into the well and made a cave. You took me in away from the rain.
You watched over me day and night until my leg healed. You gave me food and a warm fire to keep me warm.
You shared stories of your adventures with me and I heard them with such attention and wonder.
I knew they were lies but it had been the first time in my life where someone actually cared about me.
If it wasn't for you, I would surely be dead and gone. And now you ask me what I think, then hear me well.
I think you are my best friend. Family only stick with each other because it is by blood. But friends....
Friends stick together because they want to and want to see you happy.
What else can I say? What should I do to prove that to you?"

Having heard those words, Hiro grabbed Kenshin's hand and held it tightly. He cried and said,
"Thank you for being my friend as well. I thought I would be alone for the rest of my life.
But now...now I don't have to feel so alone anymore." With that, they both held tightly each others hand and laughed.

You see the first thing Kenshin asked was, "Are you my friend?" and Kenshin followed by asking him, "What do you think of me?" Simple questions sometimes don't have a simple answer that we can easily convey. But the heart, the heart of a true friend requires little words. A true friend needs no words but a simple look to understand the troubles and pain one feels. Cherishing the time you have with them is the best gift you can give them. One day they may not be there.
