Katon is one of the five basic elemental nature transformations. You can use fire release by molding chakra inside of your stomach, then releasing it through your lungs and mouth. Most Katon techniques are mid to long range, and deal combustive/explosive damage.
Katon users seem to mainly stem from Konohagakure. The Sarutobi and Uchiha clans are both families that use fire release, and the Uchiha clan is said to have a natural affinity for Katon. Also, the Uchiha are the first to show the ability Amaterasu, which is unlocked via Mangekyō Sharingan, and Amaterasu is said to be the most powerful of fire techniques.
Katon is weak to Suiton, because naturally, water extinguishes flames. It is also superior to Fūton, because wind only fuels a fire, as shown by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha's combination attack. It is speculated that Katon relates most to Raiton, since both wreak heavy destruction.

An excellent explanation! ^_^ If you ever have a question feel free to ask. The first jutsu is a simple fireball. Since you've never molded katon chakra before try acquiring a strong mental image of the nature of fire (a description of fire's characteristics) and mold a portion of your chakra to mimic that nature. Then focus katon chakra into your lungs and exhale it as a small fireball at a dummy nearby.

-Kouen envisions a picture of large fire, and inhales. Keeping that image in mind, he molds chakra within his stomach, trying to match the fire's properties. After a few moments, he exhales the pent up chakra, whilst simultaneously using nature transformation to change his chakra to Katon. A small sized fireball forms from his mouth and speeds towards the closest dummy, striking it in the chest and smoldering it to ashes.-

Not bad. For this jutsu exhale several small fireballs at your target in one breath. Nothing to it. Burn a few dummies nearby.

Nicely done. Here's something a bit different. Perform the Snake, Ram, Monkey, and Tiger handseals before exhaling flammable gas at your target instead of fire. Ignite the gas with a fire jutsu to create a large fireball and set him ablaze. Find a dummy nearby.

This jutsu is the basic Katon jutsu. It allows you to release small fire balls or streams by exhaling it as usual or releasing fire from your limbs as you move. Another method is to cover your hands or feet with fire for more damaging taijutsu attacks. Try all three on these targets.

-Kouen faces the nearest enemy. A moment later he inhales chakra in his stomach, and performs the hand seals for snake, then ram, monkey, and tiger. Kouen spews a thin cloud of gas in front if him, then again kneads chakra and sends a small fireball into the gas, engulfing the dummy to flames.-
I'm really liking Katon!
-Kouen walks a few meters to his left and spots the objective dummies. He inhales and kneads chakra in his stomach, then releases it through his mouth, sending a small but more powerful ball of fire at the left most dummy, hitting it in the chest-
-Kouen then faces the middle dummy. He again kneads chakra, but this time he coats his hands with his Katon chakra. After observing his hands for a moment, he runs a few circles around the dummy, with his hands outstretched, causing the dummy to burn to the ground.- (I hope I got that right!)
-He then faces the right dummy. After inhaling and kneading chakra, he again coats his hands with Katon chakra. After thinking of an effective way to strike, he lunges forward, and pierces the dummy through the chest, where the heart would be located, which reduces the dummy to ashes.-
I enjoy the Taijutsu/Katon combination. I may try to make these fighting styles my strongpoint.. I am eager to continue.

Great. About time we started doing sets of 3 jutsu. I'll also introduce new targets, the Six Paths of Pein. Now simply exhale a small, quick stream of flame at your target. Try it out.

For this jutsu, simply throw a lighter with a open flame and focus katon chakra on it, making the flame expand into a defensive wall of flame. Take this and block my attack.

After exhaling the chakra the pent up chakra through the ring, a small stream of fire dashes forward and expands into a great fireball, and surrounds the Pain Path whole.-
- Kouen turns to his left and sees his next target, a small area further than the last. He then forms the necessary seals again: Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, then Tiger. After inhaling and kneading chakra, he again blows through the ring formed from his fingers. Instead of streaming a huge fireball, he forms a midsized fireball and hurtles is towards his target.-
If only I was skilled enough to actually harm them!

-Kouen catches the lighter, and flicks it lit. After inhaling and kneading chakra once more, he nods to his sensei to begin his attack. As the shuriken speed towards Kouen, he tosses the lighter ahead of him, and coats the lighter and area around it with Katon chakra, creating a wall of flames. When the shuriken hit the flame wall, they lay suspended midair for but a second, then fall to the ground.-
And here I've been thinking Katon was solely offensive.. Are we ready to progress?

Good, good. Here's a jutsu that comes in two forms, a burning trap and a projectile. After performing the Tiger handseal produce and manipulate fire streams running across the ground. They should surround the target in the form of a circle preventing escape. Alternately, with the same Tiger handeal, a fire stream can be exhaled and manipulated to form a ring-shaped fireball. Use both forms on this guy. Can't have my dinner getting away.

( Katon: Hibashiri ) - Fire Release: Running Fire

Description: After performing the Tiger hand seal by utilizing their fire chakra, the user will create a stream of fire that can be manipulated into several forms (rings of fire that runs on the ground or a circle of fire flying through the air) before striking the target. It can also be used in combination with Wind Release: Divine Wind to create a tornado of flames, or with Wind Release: Godly Wind from the Mountains to release a massive inferno. The stream of fire can be created by stomping the ground (running across the ground in this case) or by spewing the flames (which will form an airborne ring of flames that will travel towards the enemy).
Next, attach a long cord-like object to your target and perform the Snake, Dragon, Rabbit, and Tiger handseals. Then breathe fire along the cord causing the flames to rush toward and incinerate the target at the other end. The best method is to trap your target with ninja wire so it can't possibly miss its mark. Find a Pein around here.

For this jutsu simply perform the Tiger handseal and exhale a fire stream. Nothing new. That guy looks cold.

-Kouen again performs the tiger seal, inhales and molds chakra. He then exhales the chakra and forms a ring of fire. The fire ring speeds toward the crab and hits it, cooking it alive.

-Kouen then walks toward the nearest pain and ensnares him with thin metal wire. He walks a short distance away and puts the end of wire in his mouth. He inhales and performs the Snake seal, followed Dragon, Rabbit, and Tiger seals. After molding chakra, he exhales it down the length of the line, forming a stream of fire that rushes down the line and strikes the Pein in the chest.-
Effective.

-Kouen walks towards the group of statues and stops about 4 meters short of their location. After performing the seals for Rat, Tiger, Dog, Ox, Rabbit, and Tiger, he inhales and molds chakra. A few second later he exhales the pent chakra, forming a group of fireballs that scatter and hit the statues and ground surrounding. Feeling satisfied, he shows a faint nod.-
On to the next one..
- Kouen locates the nearest Pein, then inhales and molds chakra. He then exhales the chakra and forms a wave of fire. Once the wave almost reaches the target, Kouen manipulates the chakra to steer to the right and behind his opponent, and then toward himself and to the right again, encasing the pain in a torrent of fire.-

Not bad. Here's something new. After performing four handseals, gather katon chakra in your lungs and exhale it, converting the chakra into burning ash instead of fire. The ash would hang in the air around your target like a cloud. Then by clicking your teeth or through other means, the ash is ignited and the target engulfed in a flaming explosion. In addition to its offensive potential, this tehnique may also serve as a hazardous smokescreen choking the target and discouraging he use of certain elements like lightning and fire. However, you will also be at risk of having the ash blown back at you by wind jutsu or getting caught in the explosion if you're too close. End this party with a bang!
