Haha but you can. Of course if you're focusing on the subtitles it's just sound like background noise.

If you put in the effort though you could learn, like watch an episode and try to memories the text, then watch it without subtitles and see if you can match certain dialogue with translated meanings. After a lot of practice you'll get the generally idea of what words mean.

It's a lot of work though.

I also took up Japanese for a bit, and I learn new words and phrases every now and then, but I haven't gotten to a point where I can have a conversation yet...........

Try watching a raw and seeing how well you can follow along

Its doesn't really help unless you are actually learning Japanese on the side. Like if you find out what a word means, you will hear it a lot.

There are a few more but I can't think of them. But once you learn a word, you'll hear it pop up a lot.

You're too into the story. Work on some vocab, there are plenty of free resources YouTube your library then try watching with only the intention to focus on the words not the images or story. You'll find that you can start picking up some of what is being said.

I agree with this.

I've only started watching anime in 2011 and I can pretty much understand 75-90% of an episode without looking at the subs by now (depending on whether there are new complicated words in that episode).

In fact, I learned all of my English listening and speaking skills from movies, songs, and sometimes radio all while complimenting that with self-learning grammar and light writing when I was in middle school (I went to a public school and public schools in my country didn't teach English until highschool at the time, and they suck very much at it).

Though, the biggest improvement in my writing came from a course I took after highschool.


So, you really can learn at the very least Listening and Speaking skills from anime. However, Writing and reading really need some effort. I'm trying to learn reading now but the Kanji is difficult and terrifying!
