I think , that the reason why Yamamoto failed to kill this "certain man" , was because Buckbeard is hes own son.

Yamamoto had a Wife , who was a powerfull Quincy.

Since , Quincy and Shinigami where once friends.

And Buckbeard is the combination of both of the powers.

1000+ years ago , Yamamoto was alot younger , Hes son stood against hes fathers ideas , and challenged hes father to a fight to death.

Hes son , most likely thoughts , that Quincys should be the ones to controll the the balance of souls.

Yamamoto , won , but spared hes sons life , and banished him out of soul society.

Here it seems , that Yamamoto , wanted to ask them , if hes son was behind all of this or something.
