I see where OP is going with this.

If you look at the picture where sasuke is using the curse seal level2, you can see the sandals of one of the statues.

In the panel where they are falling from the sky with the heads cut off the statues, you can see the area where the water is supposed to be next to the sandals. It appears to be very small.

However, when you consider the size of the statues when they stand atop the heads, the fact that the water appears to have been able to cover the heads means it was pretty deep there anyway.

In addition, I think the valley probably gets deeper the further you are from the statues.

The explosion blew away the statues head and most of the water..... If kishi was off with his exact measurements of were the water was... who knows maybe it flooded or got higher/lower since their last fight. Water level doesn't always just sit there not changing.

No matter how DEEP or SHALLOW the WATER is, there are two consistent variables

1#

The ground is at a constant level throughout NV...
Meaning unless someone uses doton and fill up the "crater" the ground level stays at a constant LEVEL

2# the water NEVER passes above the Statues ankles....
No matter how much water that has been dumped into the valley, it never floods beyond ankle-knee level.
even when the water is flood from the previous clash it isn't above that limit.

Knowing the how high the ground level is and where water level stays, it is impossible to have a trench that deep in the valley ANYWHERE. Geeze guys this isn't hard to add up.

anime is non-cannon and the valley was never hollow unless manga evidence proves other.
