It's a consistent theme within the manga that the New Generation will always surpass the Old Generation. Just as how Naruto surpassed Jiraya and Minato, the same way Boruto will surpass Naruto.

I have a suspicion though that it has something to do with Boruto defeating Orochimaru.

It's not about power, it's carrying the legacy onwards into the future. Something is bound to happen which will make Boruto surpass Naruto. I am a bit disturbed by that cause Kishi is dropping hints that Naruto may die.

If naruto die he is ultimate fodder of all in enternal life and primesseses of time and space that can not me compreheded into our thoughts and science will do a search into space trying to find a reason to understand living things from star dust to galaxy
