One of the major problems I've had in all of the stories about Boruto (except for maybe Naruto Gaiden), is that it is too childish. There are very few serious moments, characters don't seem to be in danger of dying, and it is mostly comedic.
Now I know what many of you are thinking. Naruto is meant for kids. It isn't exactly Berserk. So is Boruto just doing the same thing as Naruto?
Not exactly.
To explain, I will use another franchise as an example: Star Wars. As much as we all like Star Wars, it is primarily meant for kids. That doesn't mean older audiences can't enjoy it.
When Jarjar Binks was introduced in The Phantom Menace, the fans were not happy. Jarjar Binks is a stupid character that significantly brought down the maturity level of the series.
When Lucas was confronted with these complaints, he answered this:
"the movies are for children but they don't want to admit that... There is a small group of fans that do not like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like The Terminator, and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike."
What George Lucas failed to understand (about his own franchise....) is that "Meant for kids" is a very vague term. There is a big difference in the target audience of Harry Potter and Dora the Explorer. Likewise there is a big difference between the target audience of Star Wars and the target audience of Jarjar Binks.
Going back to Naruto and Boruto. Naruto was meant for kids but it had its share of dramatic and dark moments. THe end of the Zabuza arc, Gaara's backstory, the destruction of the Uchiha Clan, most scenes with Hidan, Sasuke stabbing Karin etc.
As of now we have never seen anything quite as serious in Boruto. It is still early, and yet we have ad a sizeable amount of Boruto material already. From what I've seen, Boruto is significantly more childish than Naruto, which makes it a lot harder to respect the series.
It could be that Boruto will get darker or more dramatic later. We will just have to wait and see.
