So I have this old outdated pc that I want to use for surveilance cams.I think its a gigabyte ga-7vt600(-l) board with an amd 2200cpu. The story goes like this: I installed software system mechanic,ran it made a few changes,it then deleted important registry files(never using system mechanic again).with this I decided to reload windows xp sp3.after shutting down and cutting off all power I reconnected this ide hdd,started the system up,popped in windows and then the horror began. I got a disk read failure please enter system drive(something like that). I tried evrything I know+some google but still no luck.after much struggle I now get a "remove disks or other media" message but nothing is plugged in besides the ide hardrive which picks up by my friend (then had it formatted) ,and obviously a dvd drive. I'm thinking its the motherboard ide controllers. Maybe its already time for a mobo upgrade.I really want to solve this problemni mean its vintage hardware.any help would be much apreciated

let me get this clear

ur PC boots up and works fine if u use a bootable cd/dvd without connecting the hard drive
but if u connect the hard drive and try to boot it doesn't work

if that is the pblm use a ubuntu(or any other version of linux) to startup ur pc then connect ur working formatted hard drive (check it with an another pc and format it)
now install the linux in the hard drive ...it should work fine

Hey thanx for the advice.after much strugling looks like I've solved the prblem for now.I connected the hardrive and dvd drive through different cables so it seems there was somehow a clash for primary master.which is strange because its was working perfectly fine through previous instalations. I think its a case of wear and tear of the motherboard.it is vintage after all
