Chapter 28: "Ravi's Past"

Kalin: ...I want to know about his past.

Yanagi: You are asking why he is the way he is now, correct?

Kalin: ...Yeah. I mean I want to help in any way possible.

Yanagi: Long ago, when he was our little one...he did not know how to control his Hollow Half. He resurrected for the first time, and his Hollow took over going on a rampage. When it was over, he could not remember what had happened. That was the boy who killed his loved ones. He came to me covered in blood with a bleeding hole in his chest. That became his Hollow Hole. At first, you could not even recognize him... The pain continued for more than a month. He even lost his voice after screaming out so much. The more serious affliction was... His heart. He kept hearing a melody of his memory he could not explain. I taught him to be quieter so he could hear this melody clearly. It was the very melody he heard when he found out his parents were dead. This melody haunts his memories to this day, and ever since then he manifested a cold, forlorn, and callous persona. He used to be a very devil-may-care(carefree), sociable, and free boy. His Inner Hollow turned his life into a nightmare that became reality. And so he never used his Hollow powers since then.

Kalin in a sad tone: I see...I feel sorry for him.

Yanagi(talking to herself): Behind those compassionate eyes......... Yearning to heal, and stop the bloodshed... Dormantly lies a heartless killer........ With a blood-drenched past.

Kalin: What?

Yanagi: It is nothing, just talking to myself.

Kalin: I see...Where is Ravi anyways?

Yanagi: There is a pond in the willow glades, at night, the tallest willow weeps glowing tears. Under the luminous willow, there lies someone with his animal guide. There you shall find him.

Kalin: So he's going to be by a pond at night?

Yanagi: And that place is sacred place, do not run, just walk. And also, you will feel a vibe whenever you are near your willow, and it will glow. So find the one that glows in the distance, there you will find Ravi on the pond.

Kalin: I see, so it would be better to live at night.

Yanagi gets up and beckons Kalin to follow. She walk to the back porch and slides the door open. There are fireflies and Chinese lanterns among the branches.

Yanagi: The will-o'-the-wisps will guide you. All you have to do is think where you want to go.

A glowing orb flickers in front of Kalin. There are over a thousand willows in the willow glades. Kalin follows the orb, and thinks to herself, "I want to talk to Ravi". At the pond, Ravi stands shirtless on the pond's surface(he's standing on water), his head hunched over. He lifts up his hands and forms a psi ball, and some more, more, more until there are many floating around even in the water lighting it up.

Kalin thinking to herself: Maybe I shouldn't bother him.

A little black owl with red-fringed feathers perches on Ravi's shoulder.

Ravi: Hey, Manah.

Manah twitters and rubs its head on his head. Kalin approached quietly. Manah twists her head around and notices Kalin, she squeaks. Ravi looks back, and looks away. Kalin had a scared look in her eyes.

Kalin: ...I just wanted to talk to you, but I understand if you don't want to be bothered.

Kalin turns around.

Ravi(in a sad tone): It's fine.

Kalin: I want to thank you Ravi...

Kalin pauses.

Kalin: You and Tamo are the brothers I never had.

Manah peeps.

Kalin: ...When I first met you, I was scared, but now that I've gotten to know you and Tamo, I'm not scared anymore. Now I understand why you are the way you are, and please don't get mad, or disgusted at me for saying this, but...I like you.

Ravi: ....

Manah's big azure eyes get even wider. Kalin walked closer to Ravi.

Kalin: I want to help in any way possible, I want to make it so you don't feel lonely, or sad.

Ravi: Manah, Grandmother, and Tamo are the only real family I had.

Kalin: Linka was the only family I had for most of my life...but now I have Nel as a big sister. I'm glad you kept me alive, Ravi.

Ravi puts on his shihakusho and Captain's haori. Manah flutters on top Ravi's head.

Ravi: I'm going back.

As he leaves, the willow's glow dims.

Kalin: I'm sorry...

Ravi: For what?

Kalin: I don't want to upset you....I should go home, it's getting late.

Ravi: I'm not upset. I was just reminiscing through my memories.

Kalin: Okay.

Kalin smiled lightly.

Kalin: Ravi, if you ever need someone to talk to, I will gladly listen.

Ravi: Manah is usually the one who listens.

Kalin: Okay...

Kalin turns to walk away.

Kalin: Ravi, just don't cry... because you're not alone.

She slowly began to walk.

Ravi: The sensation of trying to escape... But never being able to. I'm sure I felt that. That's... "Death".

Kalin: I'm...

She pauses, and grabbed her necklace.

Kalin: I'm the reason for my parent's death...

Ravi: So was I.

Kalin: Both of us killed the very people we loved without meaning to, and I bet you've wished that your parents were alive just like I have wished for mine.

Ravi: I never thought of wanting them again.

Kalin: You never wished they were alive...not even to apologize?

Her voice was shaken.

Ravi: I changed completely ever since they were killed. It was like I flipped over into something or someone else.

Kalin: We all change...sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worst. We can't change the past, but we can fix the future.

Ravi: I can change the present.

Kalin: What do you mean?

Ravi: My Zanpakutō.

Kalin went quiet. Ravi slowly walks back to the house. Kalin stayed where she was at. Ravi continues to walk among the willows. She looked at the water for a bit. Lenne spoke from a distance to Ravi.

Lenne: Don't let her do it.

Kalin clenched her fists, then looked straight ahead.

Lenne: She gonna do it.

Ravi: The reason I can stand on water is not because of the Air Walk, each willow has an ability when it finds its Tuner. My willow's ability is projecting illusions. That pond was an illusion.

Ravi continues to walk, and when he reaches a certain point, the pond fades.

Kalin: Mother, Father, Linka...I'll be there shortly...I can't stand being away from you guys any longer...

Kalin pauses. She charges up, and forms a lightning ball bigger and way more powerful than the last. Ashes fall around her, and she feels someone hugging her.
