Chapter 19: "Wisdom Within Years"

Tamo: Who?

Kalin: That woman.

Tamo: It's Gran-Gran!

Ravi: Grandmother?

Nel: Lady Yanagi!

Yanagi: Oh! How are my children?

She looks so old as if Time itself had lost her. She is one of those women of a certain grace and beauty who wear it so unobtrusively that it takes a while to notice. Her tan face is surrounded by the total whiteness of her long hair, and, being a woman who has adjusted to many things in life and overcome many more, her face is full of strength. She has, we can see, wit and faith of a kind that keep her eyes lit and full of interest and expectancy. She wears a fourth division's Captain's Haori, the rest usual Soul Reaper attire. Kalin stood there with a confused look on her face.

Tamo: We've just finished a mission and came by here by chance. What's that you got?

Yanagi: Ah, it is my favorite, Bloodroot tea. Who is the new girl?

Nel: This is Kalin.

Yanagi: My, what a beautiful spirit you have within. So free as the wind, I envy you.

Kalin kinda blushed.

Kalin(timidly): Thank you.

Yanagi: You are welcome, my child.

Kalin: Tamo and Ravi said you are the wisest person I'll ever meet.

Yanagi: No, that was Nel who said it. Right?

Nel: Yes, Lady Yanagi.

Kalin: I have a question that maybe you can answer, Lady Yanagi.

Yanagi: First, let us go to a quieter place. Something I taught Ravi long ago... The quieter you become, the more you can hear.

Kalin: I see.

They all go to a quieter place.

Yanagi: Sit down. Now you may ask anything to you heart's content. Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I may not remember. Involve me, and I will understand.

Kalin: Do you think that with practice I can control almost everything?

Yanagi: To touch the earth is to have harmony with nature. If you wish to move mountains tomorrow, you must start by lifting stones today.

Kalin showed her power of lifting sand.

Yanagi: Well, well, child. You are in tune with the breath of sand.

Kalin: I can also control lightning.

Yanagi: You have also tamed the rage of the clouds. One day, you may be able to harness the essence of nature itself.

Kalin: Well only Lightning...I don't know if I can control water yet or not.

Yanagi: You will never know unless you try. Not just lightning, you also have the closeness of sand.

Kalin thought for a bit.

Kalin: Lady Yanagi.

Yanagi: Yes, dear?

While Kalin is thinking...

Yanagi: I have all the time in the world.

Kalin: How can I Resurrect? Nel said that with my progress it would be unstable, and I want to know how to stabilize it.

Yanagi: Your sister and teacher can open the door, but you must enter by yourself. A sound soul dwells within a sound mind, and a sound body. Your mind, heart, and soul have been thrown into turmoil from something in your past. Tell me.

Kalin sighs.

Kalin: Well, my mother died giving birth to me and my sister, and I lived with my sister and my father until I was 7, then my father was murdered. I lived with my sister in the Forest of Menos for 3 years, but she was also killed.

Yanagi: Such great sorrow. I am blind, but I can see clearer than others. Let me tell you a story.

Yanagi takes a deep breath.

Yanagi: A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight between two wolfs. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego. The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.

Kalin: A fight...but which will win?

Yanagi: The one you feed.

Kalin: So it's up to me which will win...a battle with fate... Fate, a gate that swings both ways.

Yanagi: True.

Kalin: So in order to stabilize my chances of Resurrecting, I need to first settle the fight within?

Yanagi: No tree has branches so foolish as to fight amongst themselves.

Kalin: What?

Yanagi: There is a right time and place for everything. Listen-- or your tongue will keep you deaf. Listen to the wind, it talks. Listen to the silence, it speaks. Listen to your heart, it knows. Listen with your heart. Learn from your experiences, and always be open to new ones.

Kalin: I don't understand.

Yanagi: You do not have to understand. Just listen with your heart because it knows.

Kalin: So I have to let my heart decide when it's time?

Yanagi: Yes, that is right, dear.

Kalin: Okay, I think I understand now.

Yanagi: I am sure you have many more to ask.

A million questions ran through Kalin's head.

Kalin: Not at the moment. Some questions are better asked later.

Yanagi: And some better asked sooner, especially the ones you need the answers of most.

Kalin: Yea, but some questions... I don't know how to ask them.

Yanagi: You will know how to when the time comes.
