His name was Edward Teach.

Did you notice the real life Blackbeard's name was also Edward THATCH and Thatch is the name of the crewmate Blackbeard killed before stealing his DF.

ANOTHER FUN FACT: Real life Teach was the comrade of a 'Fleet Commander' named Stede Bonnet.

There was some events that happened before this but Bonnets crew of about 70 were dissatisfied with his Command, and with permission, Teach took over his ship called 'Revenge'.

Red Hair Shanks and Red Beard Barbarossa both had scars over their left eye. Red Beard took many people prisoner in order to obtain ransom money. Barbarossa was also the name of the Nazi invasion of Russia. It was the largest invasion in history (Shanks stopped the Marineford War. Is this linked somehow?).

Shanks also shares similarities with Erik the Red whom lost his arm. Erik the Red was a notorious swordsman, viking and explorer. Eriks parents discovered America before Columbus did (His crew found Raftel before "columbus" - (Luffy?)). Erik had ginger hair and a ginger beard and is categorized as constantly wearing top grade Armour (Busoshoku Haki monster??).

About the Shanks thing- That's linkable. Assuming Shanks and Dragon are somehow partnered with each other (I believed it was mentioned, once or twice iirc) this means they share a common goal, but under different methods of achieving it... Shanks probably wants to become PK to form his own revolt against WG, and Dragon ha his own Organization made just for that... Shanks is probably giving Luffy a chance to do that to pass the torch onto him since he's much more youthful and familiar with this generation. I give these connections because what if, in all of Shanks' career of being a pirate the only thing he ever did was raid the rich to give to the poor? It makes complete sense when you think about it... he wears very modest clothing, has a real everyday guy look about him with the goatee. For a legendary pirate, he also has one of the smallest ships... It looks around 1000 Sunny size.

I also got a CRAZY idea from that second part, about Erik. Maybe Shanks and Roger are both parallels of him, but more so Roger. So Erik was an explorer, viking and swordsman. Well as far as we know Roger wasn't a swordsman, but if he was the first person to find One Piece and he's supposed to be Erik, and Luffy, Columbus to be the second person to find it...
