Generally speaking, there are a handful of theories that are the most generally accepted as to how/why Marshall D. Teach (who will be referred to as Blackbeard from here out) was able to acquire a second devil fruit ability. This thread’s purpose is to present these separate theories and see which theory is viewed as being the most plausible here on NB.
The Will of D.
The Yami Yami no Mi Theory
The Mythical Zoan: Cerberus/Chimera Theory
Genetic Chimera Theory
These are the major points that are used to support this theory; although, Blackbeard’s Jolly Roger is also used to support this theory to a lesser extent.
Sorry for the length of the theories and therefore my post. There are counter arguments to each theory, of course, but what theory do you think is the most plausible to come to fruition as to why Blackbeard was able to acquire another devil fruit ability?
The Will of D.
The first theory is by far the least complex as it based on something we already have very little understanding of to begin with. Essentially It expresses that those with the “Will of D.” have the ability/capacity to consume two or possibly more devil fruits…. That’s pretty much it.
The Yami Yami no Mi Theory
This theory asserts that one of the powers granted by the Yami Yami no Mi is for the user to absorb or ‘steal’ devil fruit powers from a deceased user. This is related to the consumption by darkness or absorbing tendencies of the fruit. This absorbing technique is seen being able to temporarily absorb the powers of other devil fruit user until physical contact is broken. This is explained and demonstrated during Ace’s confrontation with Blackbeard.
It’s thought that once the fruit user dies and the fruit’s power begins to detach itself from its former user that it is in a state of limbo. It is in this state that Blackbeard is able to absorb the ‘essence’ of the devil fruit into himself without having to actually eat a second fruit. This allows him to bypass the dangerous/deadly act of eating a second fruit while still assimilating the power into himself.

The Mythical Zoan: Cerberus/Chimera Theory
This is essentially two incredibly similar theories pooled into one due to how similar they are to each other; basically only differing in which model of Mythical Zoan devil fruit it is.
This theory suggests that prior to Blackbeard’s consumption of the Yami Yami no Mi he actually already acquired a devil fruit. This fruit being a Mythical Zoan: Cerberus/Chimera. Both a Cerberus and a Chimera are heavily influenced by the number three in some sense. Cerberus is clearly a three headed dog who guards the gates of hell, while a chimera is a creature composed of three different creatures (mythologically speaking: a goat, a lion, and a snake).
This theory asserts that due to either a Cerberus being composed of three individually thinking dogs or a chimera being composed of three genetically independent (different creatures, way different genetics, all in one creature) creatures allowing for the secondary genetically different creatures/ separate head to consume a second or possibly a third devil fruit. The thought being that a separate mind/entity/head consuming the fruit is a loop hole in the basis that an individual cannot consume multiple fruits. This is believed to be supported by the appearance of Blackbeard’s Jolly Roger.
It is also believed that Shanks’ received his scar from a transformed Blackbeard. This is greatly disputed due to the depiction of Blackbeard with a four clawed weapon, but is then defended with the fact that Shanks’ scar has only three gashes.

Genetic Chimera Theory
This is the final theory. A genetic chimera is an animal (yes, humans are animals) that has two or more different populations of genetically distinct cells that originated in different zygotes. Chimeras are occasionally found to a rare extent in humans. Supporters of this theory generally turn to a scan from chapter 225 in which Luffy and Zoro refer to Blackbeard as “They”.
Notice how Oda also has Nami ask if the mean that he has companions, yet Luffy and Zoro don’t respond. Throughout the series it is seen that Luffy and Zoro have the ability to sense things that others simply can’t. With Luffy this has been stressed to a greater extent, most recently with him being able to hear the sea kings in the Fishman Island arc. It has been seen with Zoro to a lesser extent though, most famously in the Alabasta arc when he is finally able to cut Daz Bones. Is it so hard to believe that they were able to sense this anomaly about Blackbeard? Especially when we throw in that it was known in circles close to Blackbeard, relatively speaking of course, that his body is atypical. This is seen in chapter 577 by Marco.
