ok I believe Black Zetsu was Kaguya's version of Father's humunculi. Father split his personality into the deadly sins and Kaguya split her cunning and enthusiastic sadism as well as other personality traits into Black Zetsu so he could revive her.

Remember when the IT is activated and we see Kaguya's image in the sky with that crazed grin? Well we don't see Kaguya show that kind of emotion after she is revived, but Black Zetsu is almost constantly grinning and running his mouth with giddy sadism. Before splitting her consciousness into Black Zetsu Kaguya had a more complex and intense personality, just imagine her pride and focus in addition to Black Zetsu's personality, then she'd be the Kaguya we saw in background smiling insanely.

Kaguya effectively split herself into 2 beings. Naruto derives from the bible a good deal especially in the War arc. The entire final act had everything from revalations the 10 horned beast, to false prophets, to Jesus glowing gold like the sun. We had the forbidden fruit and God tree, Eve. But Kaguya has more parallels to the bible to her.

In the Bible you have father son and Holy Spirit, all one in the same. In Naruto you have mother, son, and unholy spirit. Kaguya is the mother, black Zetsu is the son, and rabbit juubi is the unholy spirit.

They are all one in the same though, and Black Zetsu in particular contains what we see the current Kaguya lacks from her personality. If her mind was still complete maybe she'd have been more quick witted and not be so mentally handicapped in battle.
