A lot of people I've seen have misunderstood the way Obito's S/T techniques work.

People say he can only be intangible for five minutes, but that is not necessarily true depending on how you define intangible.

Firstly, there are two kinds of transmissions that Obito uses. For sake of making things easier to explain, let's label one as instant transmission (IT) and another as long transmission (LT).

Obito's instant transmission is used to phase through attacks commonly. When he fought Konan for example, he phased through all of her paper bombs.

During IT, Obito can only slip through objects for five minutes. That's because it takes too long for him to teleport into his dimension via LT.

In LT, Obito teleports himself over a lengthy period of time into his own dimension. He can stay in this dimension for as long as he wants, since he is now completely gone from the normal dimension. However, this technique usually takes too much time.

LT is seen when Obito first fought Kakashi and showed him his sharingan. After the small distraction, Obito teleported himself away completely.

The main difference between the two techniques is that in LT, Obito is no longer visible, because he is no longer present. In IT, Obito is still visible because he is partially in one dimension and partially in another. IT is used to teleport single body parts, which takes up much less time but has a duration of five minutes.

So when people say that Obito can only go through things for five minutes, they refer to his IT technique but they often forget of his LT space/time technique which has the potential to be just as powerful.

Think about instant transmission for a second. Obito's body parts are split between one dimension and another. If he does that for too long, it would probably rip the fabric of space between his body and kill him.

In long transmission, Obito teleports his whole body, therefore not having this threat. He would be able to remain in his dimension for as long as he wants.

Great analysis I never imagined his s/t to be this way (I always thought he can only stay in his dimension for 5mins at a time). Well this opens up a whole new level of obito OPness, + rep

Not everyone. I've seen countless vs threads where people say that Obito can only defend himself for five minutes, completely disregarding his LT technique.

When people refer to his intangibility they are talking about his "IT" abilities. I've never seen anyone compare the two.

Good thread.
U should also add that obito can affect others with his IT, as seen at summit where he had sasuke on his soulder and both were immune to A's attack.
Also seem that obito doesnt need to touch some1 to use IL on them, as seen with torune. Close distance is enough.

Couldn't he teleport somewhere else to get away from Konans' trap?
We have seen him being able to appear anywhere he wills.
I think we have plot no jutsu to blame here.

He has to solidify to teleport away. He couldn't do that because of the 600 billion paper bombs.

I didn't know this but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense since Obito can store people in his dimension for a long time.

Were there actually people who thought that he could only stay within his dimension for 5 minutes?
