Hmm... not much of a reptile person, myself. Although I hear there is a series about training dragons. ... I have yet to find one in a pet store, though, so I'm not really sure how people can opine on such a guide.

My first reptile was a leopard gecko. It's a lizard with a very easy-going personality but if you're uncomfortable around crickets or worms you might not like it, mine loved crickets especially. But yeah they're low maintenance and good for beginners.

I personally don't know squat about caring for reptiles, but I hear Komodo Dragons are often recommended for beginners. Apparently they're enjoyed by seasoned owners as well for their ability to deal with pest such as wolves, bears, and tigers if any roams into your yard.

No, I'm dead serious. I'm not a reptile owner myself but I think I'd prefer a Komodo Dragon over some dog or cat. At best, those common pets would catch a rat or maybe possum. Any sane person would much rather the lizard capable of soloing intruders & large beast. This is like asking me if I'd rather a pseudo-legendary pokemon or a starter.
