So, I'm SUPER stoked for this upcoming dbz game. Dragonball z Xenoverse.
But i have some things i want to share about the game. For those of you who, like me, were thinking:
"who the hell cares about another dbz game", let me explain.
The height of dbz games was Dragonball Z: Budokai (obviously 3 being the best). Not only was this the first TRUE dragonball z game 3d done right (yes, 2d fighting, but in a 3d world like mortal kombat or sould caliber etc). But each iteration actually took time to improve their games fighting.
I got the game every time it came out, and 3 even had a behind the scenes with the actors. It was amazing.
So, like most of you who played these games, heard about "Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, I was STOKED. I assumed it was made by the same guys. Incorrect, budokai was made by dimps, tenkaichi was made by spike, and they just wanted to attract budokai fans.
Anyway dimps went on to make a couple psp games, but otherwise faded out.
A game then came out (the first xbox 360/playstation 3 dbz game) that looked fantastic. Dragonball z burst limit. At the time, i couldn't play it because i had neither system, but the videos looked sick.
ANOTHER game came out called raging blast, which was by the same people who made budokai tenkaichi games. Because i thought those were by the same people who made budokai, i bought it. Anyway, this is the last dbz game i bought.
A game called infinite world came out for the older consoles, but was effectively just budokai again, and i saw no point in getting it. The people of the tenkaichi games also made a game called ultimate tenkaichi, which was ALSO not really different from their other games besides having a custom character mode (which spawned several mistaken theories of a new dbz series). it was forgettable as well, besides some interesting graphics.
ANYWAy, Battle of Z came out and was made by a completely DIFFERENT developer, and it looked so shitty. few characters, weird gameplay, bad story etc.
I was done caring about dbz at this point.
So when i heard about Xenoverse, i thought "who the hell cares?"
Then i did some research. Turns out, not only was burst limit made by dimps (makers of budokai), but THIS was made by them too! Mind you, this was their first time doing a 3d (true 3d) dbz game, but i was excited.
Then even MORE made me excited. Its coming out for PC! on steam!
EVEN BETTER: out of every dbz game to NEEDLESSLY try to do this "looks like a comic" style animation, they actually make it look COOL.
Sure, it has way too much glare and everything is too bright, making cutscenes look silly, but when it actually gets into gameplay, it TOTALLY WORKS. It looks amazing. It captures the speed of a dbz game.
Not only was this game dev the only one NOT to make all melee attacks ONE BUTTON, but they always made interesting mechanics.
the icing on the cake? Imagine ultimate tenkaichi's character customization, but on a whole other level.
As a side note... do any of you remember dbz online? it was an online game that actually had help from akira toriyama that involved an expanded dbz universe, custom characters, in an mmo style combat game. Regrettably, it never formally launched outside asia and got scrapped.
The new character customization in xenoverse seems to have a time travel element, and i think this is their way of adopting dbz online. Which is AMAZING.
I'm hyped.
