Ergo Proxy after watching it for second time years later I understood how much I underestimate this show. Have to admit I didn't even understood it entirely for a first time. If you're interested in adult, inteligent anime's this one is for you.

RANK: 8.1

An amazing anime based off of Renee Descartes quote "cogito ergo sum" Translated it means "Because I think, therefore I am". It has an amazing storyline, intrigueing characters, and an awing visual experiance. It also makes refeences to philosphy and famous art pieces (Michaelangelo's moon and sun statues and the painting Ophelia). This anime banishes the common phrase "anime is only for children" and even more common "anime is only for perverts" If you like adult, inteligent anime, or just good TV. Watch Ergo Proxy.

interesting quote from urbandictionary-

Sounds pretty interesting, you should do marketing for them. xd

Is it a manga turned anime or just an anime?

They don't have manga, it was pretty surprising for me to be honest. But check out IMDB rating ''strong 8.1''

Good. :p

I can't stand the animes after reading their mangas. So much dead time just so they can churn out more episodes. I just watched bleach last night for the first time in a long time and half the episode was Barragan following around that fat leiutenant of Soi Fan's while he cried. >.<

It was unbearable lol

I know right?! I've stop watching Naruto, One Piece and Bleach ever since I passed that story in Manga. Mostly watching anime movies, so much more fun ''mostly''

Not to be a stickler, but cogito ergo sum translates as, "I think, therefore I am". There is no "because".

Anyway, I think it's an interesting concept. Generally, Japanese Anime (Naruto for example; even games like Metal Gear Solid that aren't Anime but still influenced by Japanese culture and created by Japanese minds) tend to get very convoluted in terms of its vague philosophies, ideas, and "grand" statements about the world.

I can see how implementing philosophy might provide an interesting twist; but then again I can also see how it might just be another opportunity for Anime to make the ridiculous claims about reality it loves to make.

FYI, Rene Descartes believed in God, in case you didn't know. That quote was part of a thought exercise he wrote to prove that God exists.

If they're implementing Descartes, it would only make sense that they would talk about God right? Isn't that a major metaphysical and epistemological question of philosophy? Does God exist and how do we know? That's what Descartes sought to answer.

My point is that if they do discuss it, then they are bringing balance and philosophy. If they don't discuss it, despite the fact that this is the reason why Rene Descartes wrote those famous words, then this is a clue that the philosophical milieu their show purports to have is most likely a sham--shallow and doing little justice in its treatment philosophy.

Anyway, I'm not bashing on anyone, I'm just expressing my interest and voicing my concern. It really does sound interesting, but I don't want "cool" references to philosophy--any show can do that. I would want the show to actually engage in it and discover meaning through cleverly in the story it tells.

spoiler alert
You sound like you have seen this show. It is about god's indeed. God's who we're made by the Creator and in that show they investigate - Proxy's Why they are in this world, who are they and so on. It touches very begining of this planet and very end.

If you haven't seen it. give it a try and let me know what you think.

Yea, first 3 episode might couse bordom, but they are still important as everything else in that show. Try to over come it :) It's not actually that bad, just for some one it might. Once they're our of the Dome it all starts to make more and more sense.

It's not known to be awesome for epic battle scenes, big boobs or lots of laughs.. it's all about the plot.

I haven't seen it actually, I just guessed. I'm familiar with Descartes because I read his work in my philosophy class.

You've definitely piqued my interest, so I'll look into it when I have time.

Also, since you've already watched it, I have a question for you. What is a proxy?

I'm not sure if you know, but if you pause the first video from your post on 2:38, there are letters that background "ergo proxy". Those are Greek letters. I actually go to a Christian university and I'm studying the Greek language, (Koine Greek, to be specific) since the New Testament was written in Greek. My point is that the letters resemble some words (note, resemble. As far as I know, they aren't actual words, which leads me to believe that they are just there to look cool).

They look like ergon and praxis (actually, this is how they are pronounced, they don't actually look like that. If I knew how I'd type it for you). Both of them have similar meanings: work, deed, what one does.

Maybe I'm just being over-analytical, but since you've seen some of it, perhaps you could clue me in on whether or not that's significant? Maybe it doesn't mean anything?

On second thought no, I'll just watch it for myself. I'll let you know what I think as soon as I watch it.

Edit: Disregard my last post about the Greek meaning. This is from Wikipedia:

Ergo Proxy (エルゴプラクシー Erugo Purakushī?, literally, "The Agent of Death")

I guess it's the translation of Japanese. Still, why did they use Greek Letters? Again, probably to sound cool. Sheesh.

It has some greek mythology included in this show.

little spoilt though. who is ergo proxy

Proxies or Proxy is the name given to supernaturally powerful creatures made by the original humans (referred to by the Proxies as "The Creator" or "The Creators") before they left the planet for space. The term "Proxy" which is defined as "a person authorized to act for another" comes from the role of the Proxies as the agents or messengers of their creators.

There's not one proxy... each Proxy has a name and purpose. Ergo Proxy is - Proxy of ...

I personaly don't recomend you to read the following. just dont do it

lol
Ergo Proxy, The Proxy of Death & his purpose was simple, to bring an end to his own creator & forever make Proxy One's vengeance against The Creator's clear.
