DICE and graphics card / CPU maker AMD have revealed that the 17-minute Battlefield 4 singleplayer gameplay demo ran on the Radeon HD 7990 graphics card — the most powerful graphics card in the world, according to AMD. The Battlefield 4 demo showcased the new Frostbite 3 game engine and many of its new effects and features.
The HD 7990 is one massive graphics card that only few gamers in the world will own (and need). It’s a dual GPU card with two HD 7970 GPUs and a massive 6 GB of video memory — which is about 3 times more than any game today requires. It’s expected to retail at a wallet-busting $1,000.
We’re pretty sure you wouldn’t need a card such as the HD 7990 to play Battlefield 4 at the level of quality and settings as we saw in the demo. Usually games that are demoed live run on decked out PCs to ensure a constant, smooth frame-rate and maximum visual quality. We’ll no-doubt see a lot of optimization on Battlefield 4, ensuring that it runs just as smooth on video cards that cost $250 and not $1,000. Even DICE has said that the 17-minute demo was an “unoptimized, pre-alpha” version.
As for the Radeon HD 7990 card that powered the Battlefield 4 demo, here’s what the monster looks like:
