It's common knowledge that Sasukes namesake is Sasuke Sarutobi, Hiruzens father, however that's about all we know for sure about Sasuke Sarutobi. So I did a little digging discovered that the elder generations seem to be linked to characters from the Edo and Sengoku Periods.
Sasuke Sarutobi is the name of a member of the Sanada Ten Braves who served under Sanada Yukimura. Whether they were real people or fictional is still debated, but obviously where the name is derived from. An interesting note is that Sarutobi itself means monkey jump giving us a nice little link to Enma Hiruzens monkey summon. I also learned that the real Sasuke Sarutobi's arch-rival/best friend was another member of the Sanada Ten Braves named Kirigakure Saizo.
Kirigakure Saizo is known to be effectively the exact opposite of Sasuke Sarutobi. While Sarutobi was a koga ninja who looked like a wild boy, Saizo was a Iga ninja that was described to be clean cut with an affinity for illusions and constantly surrounded by a strange mist. Easily identifiable as the trademark of the Hidden Mist. Also going by the description of Saizo it's fairly simple to come to the conclusion that the closest manga equivalent is most likely the 2nd Mizukage who is roughly the same age as Tobirama with the next closest being Zabuza. With Zabuza being named and Trollkage not it isn't a stretch to believe that Saizo could in fact be the 2nd Mizukages name.
Since Hiruzen was Tobiramas disciple that means that he was most likely an adolescent when the 2nd Mizukage took power. That would make Sasuke roughly the same age or slightly older than Trollkage. There are two ways to interpret this. Either Hiruzen is the manga equivalent of the real Sasuke Sarutobi or it is possible that like Hiruzen Sasuke was a notably short individual. Another interesting note is that practically all members of the Sarutobi Clan have been shown to be able to use fire jutsu in contrast with Kirigakures water type.
Now on to Danzo. Danzo is most likely based on Kato Danzo who was known as Flying Kato. This could be a nod towards Danzos wind jutsu. Kato Danzo is also reputed to be a skilled magician having once supposedly swallowed a bull in front of twenty people. This feat has been chalked up to hypnosis which is most likely again a nod towards his genjutsu such as Kotoamatsukami and Izanami. This could also show a possible desire to use his Hashirama cells to capture the Hachibi giving Konoha control of the two most powerful bijuu. Its worth noting that Tsunades dead lover Dan Kato could also be named after the original Kato Danzo but other than the name little can be compared between the two.
Chiyo is most likely based on Mochizuki Chiyome who built an entire system of kunoichi to help fight in a war. This is most likely a nod towards her puppet technique as Chiyomes primary job was networking and instructing her web of spies. It should also be noted that Chiyome originally trained her kunoichi to impersonate shrine maidens which could be a nod towards both her healing abilities and the fact that her puppets wore white clothes.
*I also found a possible name basis for Hanzo in Hattori Hanzo but there were few if any similarities between the two and in fact looking at his background hard to imagine two characters that are less alike.
Just thought that it was kinda cool to know where a lot of these characters came from.
