Hi, guys!
I know that lately there are a lot of AOT threads at NB but I had to post this.
In 2006 Isayama’s work AOT was awarded as one of a “Fine Work”. He brought his works to section of Weekly Shonen Jump in Shueisha Inc. in the beginning. He was give advice to change his style and story to be accepted for Weekly Shonen Jump, but he denied. After three years, his first serial work AOT was appeared in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, a monthly magazine.
Since day one this manga aroused controversy. Disturbing drawings and story maybe won the awards but still no one wanted to publish them. It was expected that reaction won’t be positive. After 3 years when manga was finally published reception was rather unusual. While someone praised visual effect and mix of horror and terror in manga others defined it as crude and unpleasant. But manga survived and soon became highly successful.
Visual style
Considering great success of manga anime version of AOT was highly anticipated series. Wit Studio was responsible for production of anime adaption directed by Tetsuro Araki. The picture consists of color palette of browns, tans, warm grays, green, oranges, while background somewhat reminds of scenes from Walpole’s Ontario. Many critics actually believe that inspiration for AOT is found in this genre of literature (gothic fiction/England). Most interesting drawings are, of course, Titans. They reminded me little bit of people in Swif’s Brobdingnag. On the one hand I would love to see a more complex drawings of characters but on the other that could spoil picture of simplicity that is present in anime.
Animation
However, I should say something about animation. In the review of Theron Martin, published on May, 20, 2013 in AnimeNewsNetwork it was said that some scenes use very limited animation but that animation is not absolutely worst. I have to add that I really loved scenes when Eren was fighting with Colossal Titan and when Mikasa was killing Titans and I think that it would be difficult to found a flaw in animation there.
Music
From my point of view the music of AOT is real magnum opus of Hiroyuki Sawano. I listened to his music before and I like that sudden and bombastic effect that his music has (Omega). And exactly that effect was needed in AOT. Look at this scene:
Absolutely amazing!
Comparing to his instrumental music for this anime I don’t like the ending theme “Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai” 美しき残酷な世界 „ This Beautiful Cruel World“, the song sung by Yoko Hikasa
Story
If you like dramatic and strong story AOT is just right anime for you. And if you want to react like this:
after every watched episode you found perfect anime. Element of surprise is very important part of anime. And that element is not only used to freak you out but to smash monotony of talks. Also horror and terror elements are very significant factors of this anime. But I believe that these parts are used to create psychological side of the story and because of that I find them important for character development.
The story develops very fast. In last 7 episodes we saw “birth”, growing and dying of the main character. But again we shouldn’t dismiss the fact that Eren is maybe alive but either way we saw too much for short period. However, we can explain this fast development of story. We’ll see only 25 episodes of this anime and the story need rapidity. And I believe that they done it very good considering the given time. We don’t feel the need to see more in one episode (although there are some moments in anime that need more time for development).
Popularity
After only 7 episodes, after only one month AOT become unusually popular. But is it really unusual? Well, manga is huge success as I’ve already mentioned, and anime was one of the most highly-anticipated new series of the spring 2013. Not mention that animated version of AOT is pretty good, and that anime didn’t disappoint manga readers. Here on NB I saw few threads about this popularity question.
AOT is something different. At least for me and I watched a lot of short anime. This gothic element is totally new for me and I am glad that Isayama managed to publish AOT. AOT has flaws and maybe is overhyped but then again, please, consider all the good elements that I mention here.
My conclusion is obvious. This is good anime and it deserves to be popular.
Sorry if I was boring, guys!
Feel free to comment! :bye:

. Although I personally dislike it is said that this song will stand as one of the year’s best opening songs.!!!Additional information: Here are some cosplays:
