i agree, hidan and kakuzu were in the top tier of akatsuki and by killing asuma, they proved it. but they were really there to make konoha look boss when they would turn around and beat them!

Asuma died because he committed the ultimate crime of fictional works. Conceive a child. All male characters that get a woman pregnant die soon after. The writers always decide they're expendable because their family name will continue. Its a cliché.

OT: I think Asuma's death added suspense, developed Ino-Shika-Cho and made the Akatsuki seem OP for the time being. It was a well written death compared to Neji's sudden passing away.
