Well...Asuma is probably faster than Yamato and can cut his wood with his wind blades, though Yamato is good in Taijutsu and smarter. Maybe Asuma, I mean they're both Jonin

Not only that but people forget that Yamato is an expert in earth and water elements, which pretty much negates Asuma's fire jutsu.

I don't know who I would pick though. Asuma is probably faster and better at close combat, but Yamato is really good at long range attacks, and can use mokuton clones.

I would say that it just depends on the situation. Both are more than capable of winning.

I'd go for yamato, he has chakra sucking wood not to mention earth and water techniques and his ability to create and control wood like it's second nature to him , but then there is asuma with his buddhist fists thing but ja i'd still give it to yamato

I see Yamato winning. While Asuma is an expert in close range, i don't know if he can keep up with a long range fighter. I mean, i was really surprised that he could not even keep up with Hidan blade, and he got wounded really easily i think. Yamato could overwhelm him with his Mokuton. Don't also forget that Yamato is very cautious when he fights. He won't run toward his opponent without thinking. He can also use clone Mokuton, suiton, and doton to make an approach.

Well, going with Yamato, IMO it's probably a stomp in his favor if anything.

yamatos not slow. hes very skilled and a long range fighter. also great forest technique makes spiked trees come out of his arm. his earth release splits the ground in half under asumas feet. wood dome blocks asumas gunpowder. suiton beats the katon.
and he has alot of chakra so even if his wood is cut he can just make more
