Asuma hasn't really shown any feats of being able to break genjutsu I don't think and Kurenai's clan genjutsu is hyped to be better than most others. But if they're really far apart Asuma could in theory just throw his chakra blades straight through her heart/head.

Yeah, but Kurenai is pretty fast. She has the same speed stats as part1 Kakashi.

I know nothing about the prep-time. Can you enlighten me?

The only she is involved in when itachi & kisame infiltrate konoha in part 1, asuma has to protect her to cast the genjutsu. The prep is not that long but it is enough of an opening. Can't post link i'm usin my phone
