you honestly think Kisame went all-out against Asuma & Kurenai? Itachi and Kisame were not putting ANY effort into it, they didn't want a fight (Well, itachi didn't, and Kisame listens to Itachi).

As for those sound Ninja, yeah he beat them but they were nothing special.

Hidan and Kakuzu: Asuma relied on Shikamaru and threw himself at the opponent like a sacrificial pawn. He said this himself lol. Plot didn't kill Asuma. If anything, plot helped Asuma in that fight. Kakuzu did not do anything for the first half of the fight.

He's mid jounin level on a good day.

Yeah, I think he's about on-par with Kimmimaro.

Besides, they did defeat Hidan. Until Kakuzu came into the mix. Asuma made himself a sacrficial pawn, climbing silver anyone?

Burning Ash is a pretty OP tech too.

And I hate how everyone thinks Hidan was such a pushover. He could beat a ton of people if they had no intel on him. He was also limited against Shikamaru because the rope connecting to his scythe was broken.

Thanks, doubt he can beat part1 Kakashi(who was already portrayed as the strongest jounin in Konoha along with Gai) though, but i agree. He is clearly underrated :)
I agree that Kakashi and Gai are portrayed to be stronger but if we are comparing part 1 Kakashi to part 2 Asuma, don't you think Asuma would have managed to climb to part 1 Kakashi's level at least? Bare in mind that Asuma's wind will counter lightning (Kakashi's main jutsu). Asuma is also versatile but not on the same league as Kakashi. I think Asuma has taijutsu on the same level as part 1 Kakashi. Also if Asuma manages to hold his own against Kakashi, which he can, Kakashi will end up using a lot of chakra and get tired giving Asuma the upper hand.

I guess you could take that fight and say that but bare in mind he is a mere jounin who had to fight against an S ranked ninja. He managed to take Hidan's head by the end of the fight so he wasn't bad at all. You should also not forget his fight with Ino-Shika-Cho, it took all three of them to beat Asuma. Also why would Kabuto look for Asuma's DNA if he is just an average or below average jounin? He is obviously an elite jounin if you take the manga's portrayal of Asuma into account.

Sure, why not? It's highly possible. When you even look at his databook it seems like he improved a bit during the skip time :)
