Asuma's battle style revolved mainly around taijutsu combined with his trench knives. These knives were made of a special metal that was capable of being infused with chakra. With his Flying Swallow, he could extend the blades with his chakra to injure an enemy several feet out of the physical blade's range.
When demonstrating his wind-based chakra for Naruto Uzumaki, Asuma explained that these chakra-covered blades (when utilized by someone with wind-based chakra) possessed enough power to pierce through rock. During the invasion of Konoha, Asuma was able to use these blades in unison with his taijutsu abilities to single-handedly defeated nine Sound ninja (considering that Pakkun earlier stated they were Jonin-level, it was quite an impressive feat) without being hit once.
In addition to his blades, Asuma could use Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning to breathe out a cloud of superheated ash capable of causing third-degree burns. Because it was ash and not flame, the attack remained in the air around the target, and therefore remained potent for a longer period of time.

Kakuzu called this technique "a gift of the gods." This jutsu is activated by Chiriku using his left hand to make a half-ram and extending his right hand down with his palm parallel to the ground. Music starts playing as Chiriku summons the spirit of Amida. The spirit seems to envelop Chiriku and react to his emotions. The spirit is normally calm and both angelic and peaceful looking, but whenever Chiriku gets angry, the spirit turns red and transforms into a somewhat demonic-looking creature. Amida then attacks Chiriku's target with its 1000 spirit fists. The fists attack at such a high speed and number, it seems almost impossible to block. He uses this technique against Kakuzu and Hidan when they attacked the Fire Temple. However, both Hidan and Kakuzu survived this technique.
Asuma is shown able to use this technique; although not as effective as Chiriku's since the size of the spirit that enevlops him is much less.

Asuma's knives are in the form of knuckle dusters. Asuma couples these knives with his taijutsu skills to great effect, such that he can take out nine Sound ninja in a matter of seconds. The knives can be infused with elemental chakra to produce added effects. Wind infused with wind-style chakra it easily can pierce through stone. When infused with Shikamaru's shadow chakra it can immobilize anyone whose shadow it pierces. The knives are currently in the hands of Shikamaru.

This technique requires a bladed weapon. By feeding chakra into the weapon, the ninja will increase the length and density of his blade to strike an enemy from several feet out of the physical blade's range. This is done by creating an invisible extension of chakra that shapes into an edge that functions like the normal blade itself. Seeing the blade, the opponent may misjudge how far they need to move to avoid an incoming strike and thereby still be cut even if they manage to avoid the metal portion of the blade. The chakra-enhanced blades are strong and sharp enough to strike through solid rock or cut through iron. This technique works best with element chakra, especially with wind-type for offensive power.

The user spews superheated ash from the their mouth. The ash is hot enough to cause third-degree burns on the victim. Because it's composed entirely of ash, it stays in the air around the victim like a cloud. If the user clicks his teeth, the stagnant ash will ignite, creating a violent explosion

By using wind-based chakra, the user can infuse his/her chakra with bladed weapons from a distance and manipulate them. Asuma used this jutsu to make his escape from Kitane's Lightning Release: Thunder Binding
