I do agree that people shouldn't start smoking so early..and for that specific part Asuma isn't a good role model..
but he is a good character who actually had some pretty nice beliefs that he passed on to his students
Also as some people said before me he didn't make anyone do it - it was Shikamaru's choice.
So overally I wouldn't say he is such a bad role model*_*
