Ashamed? No! Not at all.
I have a few friends that like Anime and we openly talk about it.
Where are you from?
Do you have a friend that likes Anime too? If so you shouldnt be ashamed.

Ohio. None of them do. They would still accept me if I told them and all, but I wouldn't want to live with the repercussions. I'm already kind of strange amoungst them- being an introverted atheist and everything. No need to be further estranged >.>

Thanks for the honest reply. Think it'll pass?
Yes,I think so.
By me was it like that:"Oh,if i tell them that i watch anime.......they will think that I m a weirdo"

Today:"Why should I give a f*ck about what other peolpe think.......Im me and thats it"

To sum it up, I really don't get embarrassed as I stop watching something that I would feel would be a waste of time to watch, before it gets worse.
And I can't say it really goes as far as embarrassment, only annoyance.

Would you tell someone that as soon as you meet them?
Because, to be completely honest, I think part of the problem with anime is the bad cosplayers.
If people walked around dressed up as characters from Family Guy, I doubt anyone would want to watch that show either.
So when I think of the word 'anime', what comes to mind is some overweight guy with pimples holding a plastic sword and looking absolutely ridiculous.

When people find out I like anime, they either absolutely take a liking to me, or just say that it's for 5 year olds. When they say it's for 5 year olds, I just pull out the most violent scene in anime and show them, and pull out an erotic scene, then I say "5 year olds these days...".

Yeah. That's probably a better mindset. U_U

Only girls who possibly might think that dating me would be a good idea.
Otherwise, no, or rather, it depends.
For example: If I met someone who wore a t-shirt with a Naruto motif, I'd probably say something like "Oh, you also like anime?" or something.
Other than that I wouldn't really be flaunting with it, but if they asked about hobbies and such, I'd say that watching/reading anime/manga is part of it(part of my life actually).

Aaaah~ I think I get what's bugging you~
Prejudice.
And also, you seem to focus too much on reality here, anime and manga is fiction, I enjoy reading them, not because I saw a hot babe reading manga and I started reading it just to get closer to her, no, I like anime/manga because the stories themselves are entertaining and so much more.

The fans are something different, they're not the manga nor the anime themselves, they're just fellow fans, and you'll be surprised to know that they do quite differ from your preconception, though there are those fitting the picture you paint, even then, so what?
Is Naruto worse now that you know there are people whom enjoy cosplaying, even though they don't always look the part? Now that you know there are people on this forum and other forums whom troll and flame others for whatever wretched reason?

If you are afraid of not being accepted for liking something like anime/manga, afraid of being alone, then I'd like to refer you to your closest anime/manga convent, and confirm with your own eyes what people your fellow fans are: Is everyone an overweight, pimply person(acne isn't really restricted to our lot I'll have you know~)?
Are you really reading Naruto or are you just flipping through the pages, busy doing something else when watching the anime?

Sorry for the essay, I tend to become long-winded with things I like.

No. Thank you for being long-winded. It was nice of you.

And I would reply to your points but I hate to whine. So we'll leave it at that, alright?

The older I get the more ashamed I feel for liking anime. Everyone around me is into Reality TV, Sitcoms and stuff like that. Anime is considered childish. So I hide the fact that I watch it or go on sites related to it..

I am not ashamed for liking what I like. I love it. If you're ashamed, then you don't love it. It's sad actually people put things they like "away" for others because a certain group or certain amount of people don't like it.

Anyways, no I don't and never will.

One more thing, a lot of my friends actually like anime, so it's nothing for me to hide, it's actually a common topic of conversation for my friends and I. I wouldn't try to acquaint myself with someone who insults anime, unless they have other really good features to make up for it. Why hide something you like, for people you don't like?

Enjoy your time watching the anime, don't take it too serious. Don't hide the fact that you watch them but also don't go out there and let everyone know. Just let it slide, people will get to know that you like anime and they - at least some of them - won't be ashamed of you.

i dont understand... whats so bad about liking an anime? although i think it is not something you should hide or flaunt either. just be yourself and take pleasures in doing what makes u happy. well ofcourse if you go around telling people that u talk to ghosts and go to school looking like an elf, then thats a different story.
