It's as I've been telling people for ages; the Sharingan's power lies in the tomoe.
Mangekyō is basically six tomoe arranged into a unique pattern, but Sasuke's Haggers-sourced Rinnegan allows him to combine the overall power of both ocular dōjutsu, somewhat akin to the original Rinne Sharingan but on a lesser scale. By combining the two, the Mangekyō's pattern is forcibly undone and spread out into the original six tomoe.
Now where's my foie gras?
