If you'd watch the anime, you'd understand, also just read the history listed under childhood it would explain it also. Pretty much she was groomed to act like a male... the Fate/ series took a different look on who King Arthur was.

The way Paths told me to watch them was Fate/Zero > Fate/Stay Night > Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works > And, when it comes out Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel.

Though, I did watched UBW before I watched Fate/Stay Night, as different animators, made watching Fate/Stay Night hard compared to the others.
