-Well charging tuition pays for professor salary increases which leads to the ability to hire the best of the best which increases education over all.
-The fact that most colleges are independently owned means they MUST charge students to attend or the school would not be funded whatsoever and would close down. And without being governmentally funded, it leads to the creation of schools with a greater diversity than the cookie cutter state schools can be.

In my country ( sri lanka ) there been free education from 1948 . it allow everyone to have a proper education poor , middle class and even rich .
