By bringing up optimism it makes me assume they interpreted what I said as pessimism because that's how people view realism or they'd be realists.

That's if you think pessimism and optimism are the only two options. Many people see optimism and realism as two different things, so them bringing up optimism as a response to your definition of realism doesn't mean they're pessimists.

I've heard alot of people in the past say they're realist when they're just pessimists as if you need to be a pessimist to be a realist and I don't agree with that.

I'd say I am mostly pessimistic. Not always but most of the time when I am in certain situation I predict all possible negative outcomes of it and I dont even consider the positive ones.
