It's been stated multiple time's that they are basically the Senju. Ashura transmigrates into his descendants thus the Uzumaki are his descendants not his cousins until proven wrong by manga.

Considering their lineage linking to Kaguya, they are offspring clans that are descendants of specifically Hamura Otsutsuki(the wielder of the Byakugan and Kaguya's son) most likely.

The descendants who retained the Byakugan consisted of what is now known as the Hyuga Clan, while the ones who retained the Shikotsumyaku became what is now known as the Kaguya Clan.

They are the equivalent of what the Uzumaki and Senju Clans are to each-other, somewhat "cousin clans" that share the same bloodline but different kekkai genkai, but still being descendants of Hagoromo.
