[Discussion] Are Naruto and Sasuke really best friends? [rant ]

While I have been reading Naruto, something keeps coming up in the recent chapters that makes me want to hit my head on a wall.




Naruto and Susuke keep refereeing to each other as best friends. Could someone do me a huge favor and show me when they were friends let alone best friends.




In part one they did not act like friends and in part 2 they suddenly are best friends, I wouldn't want Sasuke as an acquaintance let alone a best friend and Naruto is not someone I would want as a friend either.


I feel like Kishi is telling me that they are and I'm suppose to believe it, even if the story contradict that.




What makes Naruto and Sasuke best Friends?

Yeah, it was a horribly forced relationship. All their friendship development was done off panel, which makes no sense considering the whole part two was focused around their "friendship". I will say though, 698 made their bond believable and if Kishi wrote a mini arc between the Chunin Exams and Itachi's return showing Team 7 bonding more, it would have made that last scene1000000 times more satisfying imo.

What makes Naruto and Sasuke best Friends?

The only reason you cannot see how naruto and sasuke are best friends, is because your idea of best friend is not what kishis idea of best friend is(and mine as well)


When you think of best friend, you are probably thinking of someone who you always have a blast with, and that you can do pretty much anything with. Someone more commited than a regular friend. Someone close to you. Basically I give you give, and we both are happy.

My idea(and likely kishis) idea of best friend, is someone who will always be there for you, and sacrifice themselves for you, even if you dont want it, and are cruel back to them. Someone who LOVES you(by you i mean YOU. Your essence, your existance, your soul, your being.), even if you are a ugly horrible person. Someone who understands you. Someone who has a deep bond with you.

Our idea(kishi and I), view best friends, as something that will last, even if it becomes one sided. It is unconditional.


Also I do want to point out the differences in american culture vs japanese culture.

So are naruto and sasuke best friends? Yes and no. By the first definition of someone you hang with, who understands you, and you just enjoy being around, Naruto and sasuke do not fit that definition.

But sasuke and naruto do fit the definition of best friends. Sasuke doesnt reciprocate the friendship much, and it is mostly one sided by naruto, but naruto has always been there for sasuke, even if he didnt want it. And because he was always there sasuke acknowledges that naruto is his best friend.

Basically though best friends dont even need to communicate with words. They just understand each other.

Sasuke risked his life for Naruto when he took Haku's needles for him, and Naruto risked his life for Sasuke when Sasuke fled the village. What else do they need to do to be best friends?

This and Sasuke was also ready to sacrifice himself to save him during the fight with Gaara.
Naruto was also always concerned about sasuke throughout the whole series.

I've already posted this somewhere but I guess I'll have to repeat myself. The reason they have this special bond is because they share the same pain of being alone. They've noticed this commonality when they were young and because of this shared pain they were pretty much each other's first bond. They both felt the same way and cared for each other but they never showed it. They were also rivals at the same time. To be strong like Naruto was Sasuke's goal and the same goes for Naruto. They looked up to each other and both of them grew and got stronger because of this. I don't know about you but I think that their relationship is beautiful. I also thought it was kinda forced and one sided before this chapter but not anymore. Kishi did a good job by letting us know about sasuke's feelings for naruto.

I agree with this. We just didn't get to see enough of their bond's development.

The reason we didn't see the bond's development was that Kishi chose to keep Sasuke's thoughts and feelings (regarding everything except Itachi) hidden from the reader to maintain the suspense.

Understanding someone doesn't require a set amount of time or specific set of actions; and once you develop a connection, it is maintained by each person's thoughts and feelings and not necessarily by being together. Because the had this understanding and connection, they saw themselves as friends.

First, what exactly is a "Friend"

Second, you are not the characters...nor have you been raised in an environment similar to the characters/most likely. so why should they be restricted by what 'you' see as friendship?

for sasuke, Naruto is his best friend because he is the only one Sasuke acknowledged as his friend in the first place.

They have done more to be considered friends then most peoples real life friends...Saved each others life/Stuck up for someone even when they committed a crime, Sasuke admitting that he cared about his teammates during the Garra battle was enough...people just like to twist sh*t, so they'll say that means they were comrades not friends.

Sometimes people will say Naruto was dumb for not knowing who his 'real friends' were...simply because he use o skip class with a few people. (but they completely disregard those characters attitudes towards Naruto when they were first introduced)

-The tree climbing exercise where they both made it to the top.
-When Sasuke jumped into a trap to save Naruto VS Haku. "My body just moved on its own."
-The concern Sasuke felt for Naruto when he engaged in battle with Orochimaru (part 1). He knew he couldn't win.
-When Sasuke first told Naruto he wanted to fight him.
-When Naruto showed concern for Sasuke during his fight against Yoroi
-When Sasuke showed interest in whether Naruto beat Neji
-When Naruto told Sasuke "don't lose to a guy like that" (Gaara).
-When Sasuke referred to Sakura and Naruto as "important comrades" during the Gaara fight.
-When Sasuke referred to Naruto as his "closest friend" during the VOTE fight.
-Sasuke smirked when he revisited the land of waves in part 2 when he saw the name of bridge (the great Naruto bridge).
-When Sasuke thought of Naruto and the rest of team 7 during the killer bee fight.
-Naruto's whole goal of rescuing Sasuke was for himself as well as for the sake of keeping his promise to Sakura, because of their bond.
-The fact that Sasuke had to resolve to killing Naruto in order to end all ties between them.

Probably a few other things that I missed.
