So I've been thinking of this lately, and I came to a conclusion. Maybe the "mirror" wasn't really a mirror. Le Gasp. What I'm thinking is it was mis-described when the legend was made but what could look like a mirror and use the sun to burn objects? Glass. Like a magnifying glass. If the glass was contoured just right like a magnifying glass then put on a rotating base and a pivoting anchor they could turn and angle the glass changing the projection of the beam.

I also stumbled across an article that poses it may have been a steam powered cannon that fired projectiles containing flaming liquid similar to or actually Greek Fire.

Thoughts.

I think Mythbusters tried the magnifying glass thing and it sorta worked. Like, it wouldn't blow up the ship or melt it but it could set it on fire if I remember correctly.

"Liquid fire" was used in the Byzantine times. It was basically explosive substances mixed together. The Arabs are still mad about it apparently lolololol.

Tesla almost brought this idea to fruition.
Yeah I'm familiar with Tesla, not 100% but roughly, wasn't his death ray going to use the natural energy in the atmosphere to be his energy?

They did and it caught things on fire but not quick enough to sink the ship let alone a fleet. My thinking is you see how quick things ignite when burning them with a magnifying glass(or us juveniles do) maybe a mirror isn't right maybe it was curved glass and they used the same principles as burning things with a magnifying glass.
