Chapter Two: Of Fathers and Sons
Ravier woke the next morning. He checked his leg, and it was almost fully healed. Still, he wondered. ?Who saved me? Why? And who, or what, is Indigo?? He didn?t have much time to ponder, as a snake just came into view on one of the branches, and he felt it would be best if he left. So he jumped out of the tree, and felt a twinge in his ankle, but nothing more. At least that was better. But where would he go? He wasn?t welcome anywhere, and all he wanted was some answers. ?That?s it!? he realized. ?I?ll go to Ghanka Shrine!? Maybe God would give him an answer, or at least some direction. He realized his left ankle was numb. The snake had bitten him after he jumped! ?Just my luck. The snake I end up with had to be poisonous.? He limped onward, toward the nearest town, oblivious to the tragedy about to unfold?
When he walked into town, he could immediately tell something was wrong. Not a person was to be found. It was a ghost town, but not quite. All the people were gone, but other than that, everything was fine. Suddenly, the town burst into flames. He was about to run, when he saw a shadow. Then it was gone. He had to find whoever it was, maybe they could help him, and tell him what was going on. It was a risky move, they could be hostile, but at this point, he had no choice. His entire leg was numb now, and he had to use a metal rod to balance. He saw the shadow again, and followed it into a flaming warehouse. He found the person lying against a box. He looked vaguely familiar, though he couldn?t place it. ?Is that you, son?? the figure rasped. ?DAD!? Ravier shouted. His dad went missing when he was 5, presumed dead. ?Son, I don?t have much time, but you need to know one thing. You?re different, son. You?re?? He never got to finish the sentence. As Ravier took one last glance at his father, he couldn?t help but notice anything that pointed to how he died. The man looked about 50, and he looked fine. Still, the clock was ticking, and the house was burning, so Ravier realized he had to leave now, or join his father.
He was running back toward the door, when he saw a barrel with a snake on it. He knew from his mother?s teachings that medical supply containers were usually marked with what it was supposed to counteract. He found some leaves in there. ?Well, I guess my mother?s advice has saved me once, so why not?? He quickly applied the leaves, then was about to leave the warehouse, when he spotted a sheathed sword lying against a crate. He knew this was a golden opportunity, as it would be hard to convince a local blacksmith to make him one, considering how little silver he had on him. He snatched the sword, and rushed for the door. Looking back, he saw the crate the sword was leaning against was now in flames. ?Whew! That was close!?
Ravier left what remained of the town in bad spirits. But he now knew what he had to do. He had to uncover the mystery of his father?s past. Maybe that would give him some insight. The question is: Where should he go? He decided to continue toward the shrine. Feeling finally returned to his left leg, thanks to the herbs he found. He was happy that he found a sword, but quickly realized that he was horrible with it. Any skilled thief could beat him at his level of experience. He set up a training ground in the forest and practiced ?til dawn.
Ok, that's it. Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I plan to post a link to Chapter 1 once I get 10 posts.
