So for my birthday, my grandmother gave me 2000 dollars to spend on a computer for college. She says i can spend all of it on a computer of my choice, but i'm to give her back anything I don't spend (and i'm giving her a receipt).

My question is, whats the best use of ALL 2000 OF IT?

I plan on mostly going on facebook sometimes, using microsoft word occasionally, and making those stupid scrap books with my pictures.

So I think for my purposes... the best way to spend the 2000 dollars is a mac right?

I feel like they were made exactly for my situation: want to spend a lot of money to casually surf the web.

But what is YOUR input?

Apple products are overrated/overpriced IMO. You can buy a computer with the same/better specs for less than half the price of an apple product. Just a question, why would you want to spend all $2000 on a computer? You can buy a computer for like $1000 that'll work for all 4 years in college and save up the extra $1000. ASUS/Compac are good brands from my experience. Desktops are the way to go and a $2000 computer/laptop isn't worth it if all you're going to do is go on fb and use MW. I wouldn't spend all that money on a computer, I'd invest half of that.

I've have a Mac Book Pro for almost 4 years now and I wouldn't trade it for a PC any day. PC's are sluggish compared to my MBP. I've also split water on it twice and it still runs just fine. My friend who got an HP laptop the same year as me has had a ton of problems with it. If you plan on gaming, then you shouldn't but a Mac.

If you need it just for college and the software in Microsoft Office then I would suggest one of these:

They're really popular right now in schools. They are lightweight and a great alternative to a laptop.

@Jiraiyathesannin:

You can build or even buy a PC off amazon/newegg that will out perform what apple has to offer for the same price. Don't listen to that marketing crap apple fan boys believe. "PC's have viruses!!!" No, the internet has viruses, the internet also can give you a free program like malwarebytes that will get rid of any you get. You also only get viruses by doing stupid shit like downloading random unsafe files, going to shady porn sites, shady torrents, shady websites and more things uneducated people go to. Macs are basically idiot proof, they're what you would give to a grandparent so that they can't screw it up. Yeah, they're good for video editting, but you know what is better than apple's video editting software? Adobe's or Sony vegas which can easily match or do better and it's available on both platforms.

Hardware wise you can build a computer for 2k which will be better than say even a $3-4k mac. You could buy a 2k PC that's better than a 2-3k mac. I advise you to build a pc tho, takes 45min (for me 20min) and it'll give you hardware that'll never need to be updated in the next 8 years gaming wise for a $2k price point.

I don't hate macs btw, I hate apple because they build their shit around how to make more money.

PC Vs Mac is like Ubuntu Vs Windows. Windows is very limited in comparison, but compared to an os like linux it's idiot proof while allowing more breathing room than something like ios. While Linux just lets you do whatever the hell you want with it/on it.

" My friend who got an HP laptop the same year as me has had a ton of problems with it."

Just because he torrents, looks at porn and doesn't have even a freeware virus cleaner doesn't make PC's bad. I'm left to assume that's what he did since if his comp is running sluggish, that's what it takes for a pc.

"PC's are sluggish compared to my MBP"

Please tell me how your mac book pro out performs my PC which has two 7850's in crossfire Oc'd to 1.0ghz on the gpu clock on both, an AMD 6300 OC'ed to 5.0ghz and 16gb of ddr3 with several SSD's which all have a read/write speed of 500mb/s. Seriously, give me your model version and I'll see it's cinebench results and compare it to mine and show you that thinking that all PC's are the same is ignorant.

I'm pretty sure the op wants a laptop for college, so building a pc is out of the question.

Get a macbook, you have a huge budget and you don't seem to want to play video games on it.

A gaming PC/laptop does more than just gaming however. The hardware is better for video editing, rendering etc.

For his price range, here's what he's looking at when comparing pc to mac.

The mac in this one, doesn't even have dedicated graphics as it uses the crappy intel integrated graphics. The pc one also has twice the amount of ram as it has 16gb instead of 8gb.

let's try another mac laptop

Nope, the PC one linked still trumps it.

I really dislike the stigma of "Macs are better for college". A computer is rarely ever for just one thing, a computer is more of an extension of yourself and should be able to do whatever you want it to do, especially if he has $2k to drop on a laptop. Hell, if he wants he could just run hackintosh on the laptop and therefore run leopard on it or even use vmware to run leopard like how mac runs windows through vmware.

@OP you don't even need to spend 2k on a laptop if it's for college, if I were you I'd spend $800 tops and then spend the rest on building a gaming PC or something.
