It's been said that the winner of this battle was Akainu.
I don't think so. (not 100% sure)
I think Aokiji purposely lost/surrendered to Akainu and let him have the title.
If it was a fair fight then there should not be a need for Aokiji to leave the Navy.
He must have got a reason to leave the Navy/World Government (after knowing about their other side) and thus went alone for the investigation in the underground world. Like he said, ( at the Punk Hazard Island to Smoker )
"There are things I can do without belonging to the Navy."
"There are things I can see now because I'm not part of the Navy."
"I'm still me" (said when Smoker asked him whether he is working with the underground world or not.)
"Tell Sakazuki (Akainu) and get the admirals into action. In the worst-case scenario, things could go very wrong, very quickly, and it would become the most serious matter Sakazuki faced since taking over Navy HQ."

I think that Aokiji and Akainu are playing their own games for investigating the World Government in their own way.
Aokiji helping Akainu indirectly by sending the warnings through Smoker seems like Aokiji is sharing the information about the outside-the-Navy world with Akainu by making Smoker as their medium. Why? because Smoker is Aokiji's trusted friend.

Now the question is Why Aokiji wanted to go to Punk Hazard?
Aokiji said he wanted to meet Smoker.
How Aokiji knew about Smoker's location?
Everything comes to the same thing, Akainu told Aokiji about Smoker's location. This pic says Aokiji holding the information about Smoker's location (from Akainu probably)

Aokiji only came to give the information about the underworld to Akainu through Smoker. But he encountered with Doflamingo and hence warned Akainu about the seriousness of the current matters.

Plus, I think, Aokiji is the best choice, Oda took, to lose against Akainu and roam on the seas instead of Akainu.

The duo is great and I hope to see their hand-shaking by revealing this predicted truth to the Strawhats.

Oda never does things without any reason. Probably this might be the reason behind the unseen battle Aokiji vs Akainu.

Aokiji didn't lose on purpose. If he lost on purpose he wouldn't have taken the fight so far to the point where he was badly scarred and lost a leg.

Yeah I forgot that point.
What If Aokiji himself decided to go separate ways from the Navy but Akainu didn't knew his intentions? Also what if Aokiji didn't have any intention of saying it to Akainu and hence resulted into a deadly battle? Later Akainu understood about Aokiji's motives.

Its as simple as that, he lost, akainu became the fa and aokiji does not agree with the way he runs the marines now so he left

No Aokiji left the navy because he couldn't stand the fact Akainu was leading it.

Akainu defeated Aokiji and Aokiji did not lose on purpose and that's it

You guys mean to say, the epic battle which completely changed an island's weather was to make Akainu the Fleet Admiral and Aokiji a Loser and "That's it"?
Though I'll take my statement "Aokiji lost on purpose" back.
But I'll make a new statement, " Akainu beat Aokiji to know the reason for his resignation. But Aokiji didn't say it for another reason to not to say to Akainu about it."

He lost the battle, fair and square. What I do think though is that when they noticd Aokiji wanted to leave the HQ, they asked him to take advantage of this since it'll be known by the whole OP world. Make him try to beat the Yonko's from within.

Well given that the fleet admiral is one of the most powerful positions in the OP verse, yes I am saying the battle was just to determine who will lead the (entire) marine forces

It could be that Aokiji actually won the fight but let Akainu have the position instead. Letting the whole world think that Akainu won. I've been thinking about this lately. Although i still think that Akainu won it isn't impossible for Aokiji to have won.
