It breaks when they're low on reiatsu, not near death. A zanpakuto reforms itself when the wielders reiatsu regenerates.

Don't bother. You're wrong. Zanpaktous break when the user is at their absolute limit (or by sheer force). That's all. When they recover their zanpaktous regenerate.

If a zanpaktou breaking means the Shinigami dies then Renji, Ikkaku, and Ichigo among others should be dead. Obviously they're not.
