I am personally referring to his period when he was still the hidden leader of Akatsuki, at the time that almost no one knew his agenda and his mysterious tendencies at the time which was slowly connecting themselves with Naruto's past.

The mystery had to be solved at some point. Obito's identity wasn't a bad twist, but Obito was not written very well between his unmasking and his redemption; he became way too preachy, and the "ideological conflict" between him and Naruto was way too heavy-handed. Basically, he went from being a badass villain shrouded in mystery to a whiny pedophile with no sense of logic.
