So as we found out, the previous reincarnations of Asura and Indra were Hashirama and Maddie. So this brings me to my question: why didn't Hagoromo gave power to Hashirama instead of Naruto? Hashirama obviously possessed far greater amounts of power, without the kyuubi. Was it required for both incarnations to cooperate? Did the incarnations have to go through a near-death experience?

This. Why give him power for no reason. Plus when Madara finally awakened rinnegan which Hagoromo feared, Hashi was already dead at the time.
