For action go watch Kill la Kill. It's 24 episode long and is epic. The echiness might ruin it for you but you should get used to it.
For comedy go check out Nichijou or Daily lives of highschool boys. You can also check out WATAMOTE.
For romcom go see Oregairu. It's amazing. 12 eps. n.n
For something dark go watch Darker than Black. First season: 24 ep, second one: 12. 4 OVAs.
If you wish for something old school check out Shaman King.

Comedy: No Game No Life, Great Teacher Onizuka
Horror: Another

Other: Death Note, Code Geass

If I had to pick out good animes to watch out of these, watch these.

Clannad + Afterstory - One of the best animes ever, without a doubt.
Fate/Zero - Amazing plot, action scenes and animation.
Darker Than Black - Amazing action scenes and plot (IMO).
Sword Art Online - Not for everyone, some find it amazing some find it bad, I find it amazing.
Mirai Nikki - Also not for everyone, it involves a Yandere girl and a sissy main character.
No Game No Life - For laughs, I'm not sure if you can find any other anime that's funny like this one.
Death Note - I think it speaks for itself if you hear this name.
Code Geass - Haven't watched it but it's also really good apparently.

Edit: Steins;Gate and FMA + Brotherhood are also among one of the best animes ever, I haven't seen any of them yet but I think FMA is action, I don't know anything about Steins;Gate.

I feel like I made good suggestions, besides, I'm not someone to say watch Boku No Pico whenever someones asks for an anime to watch.

Am not necessarily talking about you too, am talking about what most people in general recommend in a thread like this,
its something that the OP can find on his own excluding Makoto Shinkai movies, i can easily Google "what anime to watch" and find all that title that most ppl here recommend.

Might as well list some... anime only right?

1) Shingeki no Kyojin: Probably best graphics, amazing story and great development. Not complicated, but it's too gore to some.

2) Monster: A thrilling thriller, probably with the most evil antagonist who fights against a doctor about sentiments on death. It was long, about 74, but it's worth it. I know you want short, but if you go for long, this is an excellent choice.

3) Death Note: I shouldn't explain this, it's a very good anime, changes your moral view of life.

4) Hellsing: I haven't seen better vampire series, Alucard as antihero is very good.

5) Code Breaker: Not the best anime in the world, but hey, beats most.

6) Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood): Tragic if you haven't watched this yet.​

Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood) sucked, I would not recommend it to anyone. But I enjoyed hunter x hunter 2011.
