Answering the question "Who is Tobi?"
A Mask hides a face beneath, a well-writen story masks its master plot with a diversion technique. With 560 manga episodes already on the shelf, the mystery behind who is Tobi is still unmasked. Moreover, Fandoms alike have argued the identity of this dual-wielder of Sharingan-Rinnegan pair of eyes, now also known as Tobi, some even come up with an unexpected, rather daring suggestion. Tobi as Izuna, Tobi as Madara, Tobi as Obito… the list goes on. Yet, there is no real consensus in all arguments exist. Therefore, this article aims to offer some analysis tools to every Naruto fans and networks, and altogether use this to base our arguments for good. Nonetheless, this article does not wish to specifically state its own prediction or suggestion of “Who is Tobi?” … we are trying to complete a jigsaw here ^^
- Using Timeline/Chronological
The first question is, when to begin with Tobi? Is he really from the time of First Hokage or after that. In the story, the first time we come to know Tobi’s existence is when he appeared with Zetsu while they were disposing Sasori’s corpse and retrieving the Akatsuki’s ring. However, considering the testimony from Naruto’s characters, the first known statement of his existence date back to the attack of Kyuubi (Nine-Tail Fox) on Konoha and the relavation of Kisame’s memory with the 4th Mizukage (which could be about 10 years ago as well). However, it is hard to determine which event occured first. But as far as the time went back, it was 16 years ago.
Now let’s move to the Tobi/Madara/Nagato Theory. Surprisingly, both of them says something with a very similar connotation. In one instance, after the death of Pain (Nagato), and as Tobi got informed by Zetsu that Nagato used Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, Tobi was angered and said that the technique SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESERVED for him (Tobi). Moving to Madara, after he got revived using the Edo Tensei, his first impression was about Nagato (Chapter 559). He thought he himself was revived by Nagato’s technique (judging from his amazement that as soon as he was told that he got revived under a different jutsu (Edo Tensei), he shocked). Understandably, we can ask two questions: What is their relationship (Tobi/Nagato, Madara/Nagato and Tobi/Madara/Nagato)? And when did they come into contact with each other?Answer these questions, we will be able to map the big picture.
- Using Literacy Tool
Here we discuss the role of characters. Tobi has become the center of Naruto’s latest plots. He declares the War, he raised an army, he developed a Moon-Eye Plan, he twisted Sasuke’s mind, he revealed to have manipulated some members of the Akatsuki, even revealed to have helped Itachi killing his entire Uchiha villages. His role is so prominent that it connects the early story’s plots to the latest ones. Normally, this shows Tobi’s skills in diplomacy, psychology, warfare, and politics. How did he manage to acquire these skills?
What is more, Tobi appears to be the rivaling images to some titular main characters: Naruto, Hashirama and the Sage of the Six Path. While the Sage of the Six Path creates the moon to confine the Juubi (10-tails), Tobi wants to divert the use of the moon to be his weapon. While Hashirama created the village and the will of fire, he wants to destroy everything. While Naruto determines to create peace, he aims to create war. These rivalries should suggest something, the connection of the cause of these 3 characters: Naruto, Hashirama and Sage of the Six Path. Rather than being a thorn to Naruto, he is the thorn to all the things related to Naruto. What is the connection between them? And why Tobi wants to undo them?
- Using Tobi/Madara dual-identity
What does it mean to pretend to be someone else? Tobi has been using the identity of Uchiha Madara to maneuver parts of his plan. It also serves as a twist in most of the plots. Thus it suggests a strong connection between the two characters. Unless Tobi has a very comprehensive knowledge about Madara’s true-self, that he is able to use it masterfully. At the Kage summit, all the Kages seems to acknowledge that Tobi is Madara. Are the Kages easy to be fooled, or Tobi is an excellent con artist? Thus what is the connection between Tobi and Madara? Back to time when Kabuto revealed the 6th Coffin, Tobi was rather surprised and “quite scared”. It thus can jump to two conclusions: Tobi does not want to have the dual-existence with the Real Madara (meaning he wants to be “Tobi/Madara” alone rather than having the real Madara comes back to ‘help’ him), and that the Real Madara or Kabuto MIGHT know something about Tobi.
- Using Sharingan/Rinnegan Theory
In the latest chapter, it is revealed that Eternal Mengekyo Sharingan ”EMS” can evolved to a Rinnegan. Tobi was showing his very interests in the Rinnegan. One big HINT appears: unarguably ”Tobi does not have EMS”. Yet one big question is asked: Tobi stated that he ‘gave’ Nagato the Rinnegan. When he is seen to wield a pair of Sharingan, then why would he want a Rinnegan which can be evolved from EMS. Does it suggests that his Sharingan is not the EMS, or even not the MS? And another big thing is asked: Why did he not implant two Rinnegans, why only one? Why does he need his Sharingan? Why is it so special that he cannot trade it with the more powerful Rinnegan? It leads us to one big mystery: Whether or not, the Rinnegan can use the ability of the Sharingan when the Rinnegan is the ultimate evolution of the Sharingan? (the Author, Kishi, has to explain it)
- CONCLUSION
Without further explanation from the upcoming chapters, we really have difficulty in answering our main question “Who is Tobi?” Nevertheless, by using the theories/tools above, we may have a lead to a good guess about him. It is fascinating to guess, because in popular literacy, logic does comes from the author. But by anticipating the next relavation of story, fans are increasingly impatient and demand more from the manga. And they have to wait for it. Good luck all Naruto Fans.
