Another way to unlock the rennigan

We know that madara unlocked the rennigan after ems be his death and kabuto said the rennigan is the nest level of the sharringan wen it reaches its limit but i was thinking do u have to get the EMS to unlock the rennigan or could u go from MS to rennigan before u go blind?
