I've always believed that Madara's death was lacking, it doesn't really add anything to his character, it doesn't give any information and he shows no regret for his actions. However, after dwelling on it for a little while (actually a long while) I think I have started to see a new side of Madara which he never openly admitted or showed. Only hinted to at times. Though before I go on with his death scene, allow me just to quote Tobirama for a second. "No one treasured love as much as the Uchiha." - Tobirama Senju What you take from this quote may differ from person to person, but taking his entire statement and explanation into the count, then I have come to the conclusion (that I most likely share with a lot of people) that he means the Uchiha were a clan of deep emotions regarding others. So, without further (partly) off-topic nonsense from me, allow me to get to the death scene of Madara Uchiha. During Madara’s last moment, he doesn’t really say much. He admits his defeat and thinks that that maybe he should have followed the same path Hashirama decided to do, to grow up a new generation to carry on his dreams. However, he corrects himself and states that; “I hated… Having someone follow me… From behind..” This is a recurring theme in Madara’s character, seen from when he was a child and all the way up until his defeat. When Madara was young he complained how he couldn’t take a leak if someone were standing behind him, and later during his death he states how he disliked having people follow him. Yet despise that statement, he was the leader of the Uchiha and a founder of the village known as Konoha. He also mentored Obito as his own replacement. But if we take all this into consideration then we can see a change in Madara’s personality. Madara is a character who doesn’t take easy to trusting others, he cannot let himself trust others. It is a simple as that. Madara trusted the Uchiha, and in return they trusted him, he vowed on his own life and his brother’s death that he would protect his clan no matter what. But in the end, Madara was betrayed by the very people he trusted. The Uchiha, Konoha and the elders all turned their backs on him, Hashirama was the only one to remain faithful. But despise that, Hashirama also stabbed Madara in the back (literally) which left Madara’s trust completely destroyed. However, despise this he took up Obito as an apprentice. But remember one thing, Madara never trusted Obito and Obito never trusted Madara. Obito was his replacement, as Madara states during the war when talking to Obito; “You are Madara Uchiha! The savior of this world.” He states that Obito is now himself, a replacement, a secondary Madara. He states how Madara is the name given to the saver of the world, and those who follow his own ideals and plans. Madara never trusted anyone after Hashirama and the Uchiha turned their backs on him. Never, not even once. It was Madara’s plan, Obito was Madara’s puppet and in the end it was Madara’s own “will” (as he saw it) that ended him. Madara was a man who deeply loved his clan, his fellow shinobi and most of all his brothers. He lost all of that, and became a person who could never trust anyone again. This is Madara’s dying words, he never liked having people following him. He never wanted children, never wanted an apprentice, never wanted anyone to follow him. He couldn’t let him to trust others. How does this tie into the plot then? Whenever Madara states something about his Illusion World he states that is is a world “of truths, no lies”. This is probably because Madara sees trust as a lie, and because of that lie he lost everything. So he aims to make a world where this isn’t the case. This is also why Black Zetsu was the one who ended him. A huge part of the plot in the anime and manga is that one cannot do everything alone. Cooperation is the key, and Madara is the complete opposite of this. Madara couldn’t trust anyone anymore, so he did everything by himself. He never worried about Black Zetsu betraying him, because as far as Madara knew it was a part of his own will. In other words, to Madara, trusting Black Zetsu was trusting himself, and only himself. In the end, Madara was betrayed by his own “will”. It is a way to show that one cannot do everything alone, no matter how much power one gains. Summary After having the Uchiha, Konoha and Hashirama all turn their backs on him, Madara never managed to trust anyone again. This is why the plan had to be his and it had to be him and no one else to complete it. This ties in with the story that cooperation is an important thing, as one cannot do everything alone as Madara tried to do. |
