As much as I prefer the anime over the manga, it isn't canon to the main storyline.

In this case it is cannon they are doing this differently this time round so we cant just assume something isnt cannon untill it catches up after all the creator of the series himself said its cannon so who are we to argue with his creation after all were only the fans that watch and appreciate it. We cant tell him how to do things despite how much we may not like that it didnt start off in the manga with the academy days and with the speed that there putting it out once a month it would have taken forever just to get to the point they are at now with the chunnin exams. There are positives and negatives to everything its a good thing they want to take the time to get things more in order but its also a bad thing cause they also get less done overall.
