James O'Barr's The Crow remake has been struggling for quite some time now, but the project continues to persevere. However, the latest setback puts the film damn near back to square one.
In a story reported by Twitch, we've learned that director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is now officially off the project. The exact reason for this is unknown, but the rumor mill suggests that the auteur has left to work on a reboot of Highlander for Summit Entertainment.
Fresnadillo's exit is just one of many in the long line of broken commitments over the last few years. Stephen Norrington was the first to take on the project with a script written by Nick Cave. Then, when an unnamed actor expressed interest in the film, Cave's script was scrapped and with it went Norrington. Shortly thereafter, Fresnadillo and writer Alex Tse stepped in with Bradley Cooper set to star. A few months later, Cooper also left the remake due to scheduling conflicts with Paradise Lost.
It's uncertain who will take the reins of The Crow now, but F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) is being floated around as another possible option.
